Year 5 Groovy Greek Day
A fantastic day with Derby Museum services spending time in the Year 5 classes transporting them back in time to the Ancient Greeks!
This term the Year 5 in their theme work are studying the Groovy Greeks, and to start the theme off we held a Greek day which introduced the children to chronology, understanding archaeology and finding out about how we can research the past. This involved discussing the different sources available to us.
The children had a fantastic time looking at pottery, dressing up, learning about Greek mythological creatures, Olympian Gods and sketching and working out what Greek objects can tell us about the lives of the Ancient Greeks. The children also had chance to do a Greek quiz to show what they had learnt.
Throughout this term the children will build on what they experienced on this day in a cross curricular way. In Art they will be creating a Greek container through studying the pottery of Ancient Greece and in Design and Technology we will be creating a Greek moving toy. In PE we have also begun looking at the Olympics and taking part in athletic events such as running, javelin, discus, shot put and aiming at targets (not quite the same as the Ancient Greek Olympic events!) The children will also be developing lots of skills such as enquiry, questioning, research, speaking and listening, communication, problem solving, information technology, creative thinking and lots more!
