Since October 2005, St Peters C.E. Junior School has offered weekly extra-curricular gymnastics sessions to children in years 3 - 6. There is both a breakfast club (which runs from 08:00 - 08:50) and a lunchtime club (which runs from 12:05 - 12:55). The sessions are all led by a fully qualified British Gymnastics coach.
In the course of the classes the children develop the fundamentals required to attempt basic key gymnastics skills whilst working towards the British Gymnastics proficiency awards.
Phase one of the proficiency award scheme consists of seven levels, with each level containing ten gymnastic elements. To pass a level, gymnasts need to perform eight out of the ten elements to a high standard. The first level is badge seven which contains gymnastic shapes that form the basis of nearly all gymnastic moves from the basics to advanced skills. The elements increase in difficulty down to badge two.
Once badge two has been achieved, the children move onto stage two of the British Gymnastics proficiency award scheme. This stage allows a more in depth approach to each apparatus. The children are able to work towards bronze, silver and gold awards on the floor, vault and rebound and also in pairs work.
Work to date has included:
- Co-ordination, balance and agility awareness work, both on the matted floor and upon the apparatus, which has allowed the children to understand how the different parts of their bodies can be moved relative to each other. Such work combines the natural actions of walking, running, skipping, jumping and rolling with the control of the weight of the body (for example the transfer of weight from feet to hands). During this awareness work the children to increase their strength whilst building their confidence, both of which allow the children to attempt and more complicated gymnastics skills safely.
- Acrobatic skills have been learnt using a variety of progressions. The skills taught and achieved upon the matted floor include shaped jumps, forward, sideways and backward rolls, cartwheels, headstands, handstands and also pairs balances work. The children also created and practised sequences of acrobatic skills, jumps and balances, which they performed to each other.
- Balance and co-ordination awareness on the benches has been achieved by all the children. This work ranges from walking forwards to more complex work, such as performing acrobatic skills, for example forward rolls, along the bench.
- Basic vaulting and springboard work, involving the hurdle step on the springboard and attempting novice-level vaults, (such as squat on, squat through and straddle onto the trestle tables) have been attempted by all the children, with some of the children able complete the vaults un-aided.
